The course includes practising Buteyko breathing exercises which for the vast majority of people are completely safe. However special precautions and contraindications may apply to individuals with specific health issues, including pregnancy.

Contraindications to using the Buteyko Breathing Technique
Do not practise the Buteyko breathing exercises if you have any of the conditions listed below. Contact the course organiser.
o Kidney failure (especially if on dialysis)
o Past medical history of organ transplant
o Past medical history of brain haemorrhage or brain tumour
o Arterial aneurysm (a swollen blood vessel, often in the abdomen or head)
o Recent heart attack or stroke (within last 3 months)
o Lung cancer and any cancer requiring current treatment
o Active duodenal or stomach ulcer
o Uncontrolled high blood pressure
o Cardiac pacemaker device
o Arrhythmias causing dizziness or loss of consciousness
o Sickle cell anaemia
o Severe emphysema with heart failure
o Advanced COPD (type 2 respiratory failure)
o Cystic fibrosis
o Interstitial lung disease, pulmonary fibrosis
o Ommaya reservoir, lumbar-peritoneal or ventriculoperitoneal shunt device or any other device to drain cerebral spinal fluid.
Precautions to using the Buteyko Breathing Technique
Contact the course organiser for further advice before using the Buteyko breathing exercises if you have any of the conditions below:
o Anticoagulation medicines (e.g. warfarin - used to prevent blood clots)
o Diabetes (especially if on insulin)
o Medication for high blood pressure
o Medication for an underactive thyroid gland
o Angina or previous heart attack
o Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or ME
o Rheumatoid arthritis
o Heart rhythm problems (palpitations) leading to blackouts etc.
o Kidney disease
o Past history of Cancer
o Severe or difficult to control asthma
